october horror movie fest 2023

I know y’all wouldn’t assume that I’d miss posting my list this year (even WHEN my life has been so busy that the blog activity has suffered a bit) 👀

My favourite fucking time of the year is BACK. I’m SO happy to be bringing October Horror Movie Fest back for it’s 8th edition??? WHAT???

If you’re new here (which I’m sure you are), October Horror Movie Fest has been a tradition I’ve been doing since 2016. I’m a huge horror fan and I thought it would be a really cool idea to watch one horror movie a night for 31 nights just for the hell of it.

That year, I curated the first ever OHMF list of movies to watch from Oct. 1st through to the 31st. It wasn’t a serious thing when I made it and I never posted it anywhere, it was just for me and my enjoyment (and it’s remained so to this day). Just recently however, I’ve started sharing my lists because I love recommending horror movies I vibe with and don’t vibe with to anyone who wants to hear my opinion.

I try to switch up the list every year in as many ways as I can with different movies and different theme weeks (although some films tend to make more than one appearance in consecutive years because they’re classics or staples).

Two things I’ve always done every October is start the month watching all 8 instalments of the Saw franchise and end the month watching The Nightmare Before Christmas every Halloween night. Previous years have included Slasher Week during the last week of October, featuring films with your fave five slasher killers: Ghostface, Leatherface, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Myers (but of course there are many more famous slashers). Last year, I paid homage to the legend of horror Wes Craven, by watching a few of his hidden gem films that go far beyond Nightmare on Elm and Scream.

This year’s list was an interesting one to compile, and I opted NOT to watch all the Saw movies in the first week of the month like I’ve done since I started this (doesn’t hurt to switch it up, right?). Of course, I wanted to diversify the list as much as possible, but there’s quite a few films from recent years on my watchlist as well as a few faves from last year (and years past).

I genuinely cannot believe that I’m still at this after eight years of OHMF and what started as something fun to do to celebrate spooky szn. I never would’ve imagined that I’d end up taking this as seriously as I do, but I look forward to October every year strictly because of the films below and the plethora of hidden gems the horror genre carries.

This will be the 5th time I’ve ever publicly shared my watchlist, (RIP to the iphone note screenshots that would end up on my Snapchat story).

With that being said, let the scary szn begin 😉
