songs on my heavy rotation: september 2021

I’m baacckk.

It’s your favourite time of the month: September’s heavy rotation playlist (and the first playlist in a HOT minute) is here.

I will say that a lot of Remi Wolf was played this month. Doja Cat was on repeat quite a bit. Couple indie tunes, couple motown tracks, and I may have come up with the most confusing genre-clashing month ever. AS ALWAYS, there’s no way to describe the kinds of songs I blasted this month sooo…

…I’ll let y’all be the judge.

Skate // Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars & Anderson .Paak)

This is my go-to feel good track. Good vibes all around. I feel like I wanna go to a roller rink or The Bentway downtown for the day whenever I put this one.

The energy of Skate is just unmatched.

You Know It // Colony House

I was today years old when I found out this song came out five years ago.

It is a BOP. I think this song came up in one of my Daily Mix playlists on Spotify and I haven’t been able to stop listening to it since. It’s just such a good song to listen to, really at any time of the day.

Talk Too Much // COIN

Apparently I’ve got a thing for discovering amazing songs that came out years ago. This song is four years old and I’m listening to it daily like it came out yesterday.

It’s the perfect song for the road, for pretending like you’re in a coming-of-age indie film but also a film about navigating life as a young adult. It’s a good song for motivation but also if you were really itching to dance to something at 2am.

I’m talking too much (🤪) but you get the point.

Heather // Conan Gray

I actively tried to avoid Heather when this song was popping off on Tik Tok. Every other video I watched seemed to have an audio of this song attached to it, so my interest in wanting to listen to the rest really didn’t go anywhere.

This song is really beautiful though and it came up really randomly on Spotify (as most of the songs mentioned on here do), but it’s found its way onto my heavy rotation due to the magical kind of vibe/feeling I get when I listen to it.

Échame La Culpa // Luis Fonsi ft. Demi Lovato

I feel like every month I will pick a Latin song that I bump the loudest for no reason and cling to it. In July and August (having been no heavy rotation playlists), I clung onto Duele El Corazon by Enrique Iglesias for dear life (but that song is also a fucking bop).

Any time I feel like dancing for no reason, Échame La Culpa has been the song I go to.

Gyal You A Party Animal // Charly Black ft. Daddy Yankee

On that note (referencing the previous song above), this is another track I’ve run to when the feeling of just wanting to loosen up a bit kind of creeps up on me.

I feel like tracks like Gyal You A Party Animal are timeless.

Ain’t Shit // Doja Cat

I literally fucking love this song. Ain’t Shit calls you a baddie in a million different ways and I’m still baffled by it, to be honest.

BLACK PARADE – Extended // Beyoncé

Black Parade does a remarkable job of lifting me up when I’m at my lowest and empowering me. September brought me moments where I was feeling like that a lot and found that this song did an amazing job of reworking my mindset.

Letting Go (Dutty Love) // Sean Kingston ft. Nicki Minaj

I forgot how much I fucking love this song oh my god.

I’m struggling to grasp how Letting Go (Dutty Love) is literally 11 years old, yet it still holds the intensity and the energy like it came out yesterday. I swear Sean Kingston produced a lot of bops that slapped in his prime, but this one is the best of the best.

Shawty // Remi Wolf

I cannot even begin to explain how Shawty makes me feel. I LOVE this song and all the energy it brings. During my commute to work during Festival for TIFF, I’d always put this song on while I sat on the train. Remi Wolf is the force in music that I didn’t know I needed until I tore through her current discography. Her music is just as amazing as her voice and her range. I’m in awe of her and can safely call myself a stan.

Hey bestie! If you’ve made it this far and you’re reading this, it means you made it through the entirety of this month’s heavy rotation playlist without clicking off. Congratulations, you now get access to the songs that made it onto my honourable mentions list – the tracks that were too good not to add.

*Honourable Mentions:

Woman // Doja Cat

Liquor Store // Remi Wolf

Liz // Remi Wolf

Still Don’t Know My Name // Labrinth

Happier Than Ever // Billie Eilish

Until next month…

ED out x.
