songs on my heavy rotation: may 2021

It’s your favourite time of the month (again): May’s heavy rotation playlist has arrived.

Not a lot of new music was discovered (again), but I did listen to a lot of old tunes that have kinda fallen off. My mood controlled my music (you know how it is). As always, there’s no way to describe the kinds of songs I blasted this month so…

…I’ll let y’all be the judge.

Together // Layup

I started watching Grown-ish on Disney+ recently (and finished watching Grown-ish in time for season 4) and Together was featured in one of the episodes. Needless to say, I adored it and shazamed it immediately.

Bedsheets // Olivia Lunny

I had the amazing opportunity to interview and write a piece on Olivia Lunny for Universal Music Canada this month (read it HERE), to promote her new single Who Could Say No. Of course I gave her a listen beforehand and Bedsheets ended up being my absolute favourite.

Slow Dancing In A Burning Room (Live at the Nokia Theatre) // John Mayer

Slow Dancing In A Burning Room is and always will be my favourite song of all time. This song is timeless and effortless. I still can’t believe I haven’t heard this song live yet, but it’s only a matter of time, believe you me.

Whipped Cream // Ari Lennox

Ari Lennox is such an amazing artist and literally every song off Shea Butter Baby is a banger. BUT Whipped Cream remains the superior track.

I Won’t Give Up // Jason Mraz

I Won’t Give Up in my opinion has fallen off of people’s radars but holy fuck, this song is as extraordinary now than it was when it was first released.

1983 // Neon Trees

If you’re looking for feel good tracks, 1983 is one of the first you should turn to.

comethru // Jeremy Zucker ft. Bea Miller

comethru is just the cutest song I’ve ever heard and I think it’s the MOST underrated. More ears need to listen to it.

666 ʇ // Bon Iver

666 ʇ (pronounced 666 upsidedowncross) found its way onto my rotation when I was reading a short story I wrote a few years ago. One of the chapter titles had been inspired by this song and some of the lyrics, so naturally I started listening to it again. I’ve always loved Bon Iver but I’ve definitely fallen off their music recently.

Light It Up // Major Lazer ft. Nyla

Did Light It Up come out like six years ago? Yes. Am I bumping it like it came out yesterday? Abso-fucking-lutely.

SOUR (the album) // Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia Rodrigo wrote the album I wish I’d listened to when I was in elementary/high school. Had this album been around when Lorde’s Pure Heroine dropped? Wheew chileeee. This girl is a force to be reckoned with and the industry is NOT ready for what she’s made of and what she’s coming to deliver. Cheers to this badass for delivering such an enthralling debut LP.

Hey bestie! If you’ve made it this far and you’re reading this, it means you made it through the entirety of this month’s heavy rotation playlist without clicking off. Congratulations, you now get access to the songs that made it onto my honourable mentions list – the tracks that were too good not to add.

*Honourable Mentions:

Build A Bitch // Bella Poarch

Slide Away // Miley Cyrus

face the sun // Miguel ft. Lenny Kravitz

Everybody Talks // Neon Trees

Need U Bad // Jazmine Sullivan

Until next month…

ED out x.
